Windows 2000 Professional And Windows 2000 Server

We're ceasing all support for all flavors of Windows 2000.  Given the security model of this operating system, it's just far too "open" to run unless you install a third-party firewall.  I've observed far too many Windows 2000 servers get compromised because of this, regardless of it's patch level and security settings, etc.  I've pulled my hair out more than once because of this.  Windows Server 2003 is far more secure, especially IIS 6.  Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Well, pretty much just a "me too" post.  IIS 6 is far superior to IIS 5 so for web apps there's no reason to keep Windows 2000 Server around (all I use is Windows Server 2003).  And for the workstation, I much prefer Windows XP Pro to Windows 2000.  I own my own (very small) business, though, so my 'enterprise' decisions are pretty easy, but Windows 2000 hasn't been a part of my architecture for several years.

Just to give you an idea of our place, we have about 100 PCs in which half are 2000 and half are XP. We'll probably switch them all to XP very soon. As for our servers, we only have 1 server that is a 2000 box and the rest are 2003. The only reason for that one 2000 server is because we have a Nortel Meridian phone system with a piece of software that will not run on 2003.

Yep, I hear you on that.  We also had to run a server on Windows 2000 Server because of the website (which was developed and supported by a third-party, bad idea I think) it had running on it.  Amazing.  Needless to say, the server was aging and was replaced, and the old server was upgraded anyway.  It's going to be interesting to see what ASP NET 2.0 breaks.  :-)

I don't think it will break a whole lot. Microsoft has been doing a great job with getting customers builds to test before rollout. With VS not being released until Nov 7th and VS Beta 2 already released, customers can prepare for the worst and provide feedback via the MSDN feedback center.
